What is the “Unexpected Red Theory”?
The “Unexpected Red Theory” is an intriguing interior design trend that has gained attention recently. It was coined by Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon in a viral TikTok video that garnered over 900,000 views. So, what exactly is it?
In simple terms, the unexpected red theory involves adding anything that’s red, big or small, to a room where it doesn’t match at all. Surprisingly, this unconventional approach often results in an improved overall look. Red, despite being a bold color, is considered as versatile as a neutral because it can work well in almost any color palette and with various materials. Whether used as an accent or complementary tone, red can match an unmatched edge to interior spaces.
I have realised that I have been applying this knowledge in my own designs for years! I have always felt that red makes other colours ‘pop’ and creates a comforting, homely and warm feeling. I do not feel a space is complete without a pop of red..
